Encouraging Behavioural Change Through Animation

A theory-informed audiovisual support resource aiming to enhance intentions to adhere to treatment for families of children with Cystic Fibrosis. Scoop is a resource for parents which contains motivational and skill developing elements to promote and foster adherence to physiotherapy

The question driving this research was whether audiovisual intervention can demonstrate techniques and strategies for increasing adherence to chest physiotherapy, change parent illness perceptions underpinning views about treatment effectiveness, overcome child resistance, and increase parent/child motivation?

Scoop was funded by the Chief Scientist Office (CSO) and was a collaboration with the University of Stirling and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. The 3DVisLab investigated the potential for using 3D animation to encourage behavioural and intentional change among families of children with Cystic Fibrosis with respect to adherence to chest physiotherapy regimens. Such regimens are a vital component in the management of Cystic Fibrosis and help prevent lung damage arising from the condition.

The investigation undertaken by the 3DVisLab took the form of a short animated audiovisual resource which, in conjunction with a family-specific adherence plan, aimed to raise awareness of and increase adherence to a physiotherapy regimen.

The aim was to provide families with information, motivation, and strategies to overcome barriers to adhering to the physiotherapy regimen and to enable parents to visualise the lungs and bronchi, the mechanism of Cystic Fibrosis, the impact of physiotherapy, and to find effective strategies to increase adherence.
